Actions by two processors in North Carolina is bringing some good news and some bad news for workers in Sampson County and Union County, respectively.

Smithfield Foods has completed a program to add 160 jobs at its Clinton, N.C., meat packing facility in Clinton, N.C., by adding a second shift to its cutting operation last month. The plant is the county’s largest employer with 1,750 workers producing fresh pork, bacon, loins, chops and marinated products for domestic and foreign markets. The new shift will focus on raising levels of exports for products destined for Japan, which have a higher margin than domestic products.

Meanwhile, Gold Signature Foods filed a notice late last week that it plans to close a food processing plant in Monroe, N.C., affecting 116 people working at the chicken and meat processing facility. Some of the employees will be retained through July, but the bulk of the operations at the plant were halted last week, according to the filing under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act. The plant is owned by Brooks Food Group.

Efforts to reach a spokesperson for either Gold Signature Foods or Brooks Food Group were unsuccessful.
