USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued new directives to its inspectors Thursday regarding reinspection and label verification for imported meat, poultry and egg products, as well as imported products refused entry.

All three directives are not to be implemented until May 29, 2012.

Directive 9900.2, “Import Reinspection of Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products,” instructs import inspection personnel as to how to conduct import reinspection on shipments of imported meat, poultry, and egg products. The directive is available for download here.

Directive 9900.5, “Label Verification of Imported Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products,” provides instruction regarding label verification procedure. This version clarifies instructions for Canadian shipment and nutritional labeling verification as well as for un-marked carcasses, primal parts, and other products identified for further processing. This directive also incorporates instructions regarding the Public Health Information System and cancels FSIS Directive 9500.3 from February 2010.

Directive 9900.8, “Meat, Poultry Egg Products, and Shell Eggs Refused Entry into the United States,” provides instruction about the identification, control, documentation and disposition of imported meat, poultry, egg products and shell eggs packed for consumer use that are denied entry into the country. The directive cancels FSIS Directive 9020.1 Rev. 1 from May 2009. It is available for download here.
