U.S. Representative Mike McIntyre has been presented the 2012 Thomas Jefferson Award for his work on and support for business and the free enterprise system.

The award was presented to Representative McIntyre because he has consistently voted in support of sound fiscal policy, minimal government regulation, and other free market principles crucial to the health of the food distribution industry and our nation’s economy as a whole.

This is the second business and commerce award that Rep McIntyre has received within a month's time, recognizing his work promoting jobs and economic development.

Jonathan Eisen, Senior Vice President of the International Foodservice Distributors Association, which sponsors the award, recognized McIntyre for his “strong support for the Jeffersonian ideal of a smaller government that permits the free enterprise system to flourish. At a time when many leaders of our nation are advocating policies that favor increased government involvement in our economy, we appreciate your steadfast support for business and entrepreneurship. Through your votes on issues such as the federal budget, taxes, and the workplace, you have demonstrated your commitment to our nation’s prosperity and economic well-being.”

The award program was inspired by the philosophies and writings of Thomas Jefferson, who in his first inaugural address noted, “A wise and frugal government…which shall leave men otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. That is the sum of good government.”

The custom designed awards, in pewter and walnut, feature a sculptured replica of Thomas Jefferson framed by four pillars of prosperity – agriculture, commerce, navigation, and manufacturers – enterprises that Jefferson felt were crucial to the success of the American economy.
