U.S. Rep. Howard Coble (R-NC) is resting comfortably this afternoon following back surgery this morning to correct what his doctor diagnosed as lumbar spinal stenosis. Congressman Coble’s surgery – which lasted less than one hour – was performed today at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Dr. Jeffery Jenkins, who operated on Rep. Coble, said his surgery was very straightforward with no complications and lasted less than the one hour anticipated. Coble was awake by 9 o’clock this morning and moved to a private room for recovery. Congressman Coble was out of bed and walking before lunchtime today.

The incision was just over an inch in length. Dr. Jenkins removed a tiny portion of the vertebrae so that nerves can pass through easily, and he also removed a small part of a ruptured disc. The lumbar spinal stenosis was causing severe hip, leg and lower back pain.

Congressman Coble told a visitor this morning that he was very pleased with the excellent care he was receiving at Cone Hospital.
