On Tuesday, June 12, members of the General Assembly will take a break from debate to participate in the Legislative Milk Chugging Contest and Ice Cream Social. The annual contest is one of several events being held Tuesday to promote North Carolina’s livestock and dairy industries.

The milk-chugging contest, sponsored by the N.C. Dairy Industry Promotion Committee, is scheduled for noon under the North Portico of the Legislative Building. During the contest, teams of three will race to see which team can finish six pints of milk in the fastest time. Following the contest, attendees will be able to enjoy free ice cream samples.

The first-place winner will receive $200 and second place will receive $100 for a charity of its choice. The Senate Super Sippers will compete for the Senate FFA Foundation. Team members are Sen. Andrew Brock, Sen. Don East, Sen. Brent Jackson and alternate member, Sen. Bob Atwater. The House All Stars will compete for the House 4-H Foundation. Team members are Rep. William Brisson, Rep. Dewey Hill and Rep. Efton Sagar.

Other events also will take place on the Halifax Mall. The N.C. Pork Council will provide free sausage and ham biscuits from 8 to 10 a.m. and the N.C. Cattlemen’s Association will give away roast beef sandwiches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Both events will include milk, provided by the N.C. Dairy Industry Promotion Committee.

North Carolina has 290 dairy farms with 45,000 milk cows that produce more than 100 million gallons of milk. The state leads the Southeast for most milk production per cow. In addition, the N.C. dairy industry produces 15.9 million gallons of ice cream annually. North Carolina is the second-largest pork producer in the nation with $2.2 billion in cash receipts. Cattle account for $255 million of North Carolina’s total agricultural cash receipts each year.
