Broiler producers have been slowly adding more egg sets to incubators and by September and October egg sets could be 4 percent to 5 percent above year ago levels, according to the CME Group’s Daily Livestock report.

The report predicted year over year declines in broiler egg sets and chicken placements should cease by the end of June, noting rising egg sets are not unusual for this time of year and that year ago comparisons reflect last year’s sharp cutbacks.

“Lower feed costs will likely encourage some production increases but it will take probably until the first half of next year for producers to start to increase production capacity,” the report predicted.

The analysts cautioned, however, that Mexico’s threatened tariffs on U.S. leg quarters and leg meat, “will temper some of the zeal for expansion.”
