Even as some in the industry voice concern that poultry growers might start to increase production, USDA reported both egg sets and chicks placed continued to decline in the week ended June 9.

Commercial hatcheries in the 19- state weekly program set 199 million eggs in incubators during the week ending June 9, down 3 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler growers in the program placed 167 million chicks for meat production during the week, down 2 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1 to June 9 were 3.77 billion, down 4 percent from the same period a year earlier.
