A coalition of agricultural organizations, including several meat-related organizations, made the case for antibiotic use in food animals in a letter to Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.).

Slaughter is primary author of a bill that would “restrict severely antibiotic use in livestock and poultry production,” the letter’s co-signers said in a news release.

The groups argued that antibiotics are already stringently regulated and judiciously used. The letter also argues there is a lack of human health risks related to the judicious use of antibiotics in livestock production and that antibiotics offer benefits in food animal production.

The coalition members include the American Meat Institute, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Chicken Council, National Pork Producers Council, National Meat Association and the National Turkey Federation.

Slaughter in February asked food companies to submit their purchasing policies related to antibiotic use in food animals to her by June 15.
