Animal welfare groups and citizens participated in North Carolina State Humane Lobby Day 2012, meeting with lawmakers at the state capitol and urging them to enact stronger laws to protect all animals within the state. Hosting the event were The Humane Society of the United States, North Carolina Voters for Animal Welfare, Susie’s Law and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Attendees asked their legislators to support the Commercial Dog Breeder Bill, a study bill that animal lovers aim to pass in the 2013 legislative session. The bill asks lawmakers to create fair and humane guidelines to provide responsible care for dogs in commercial breeding facilities. Currently North Carolina has no laws to protect companion animals in commercial breeding operations that sell directly to the general public.
“Despite numerous, recent high-profile cases revealing unacceptable and completely avoidable animal suffering at inhumane puppy mills in North Carolina, the legislature has yet to pass regulations to protect dogs in commercial breeding facilities,” said Kim Alboum, North Carolina state director for The HSUS. “It is our hope that legislators will respond to their constituents’ wishes and enact a new law to hold commercial dog breeders accountable to humane standards of treatment.”
North Carolina citizens talked with their representatives on other animal welfare issues such as fox and coyote penning and lax cockfighting laws.
Four “Shelters We Love” awards also were presented to shelters throughout the state for their dedication and work to build coalitions to improve the lives of animals. SPCA of Wake County, Humane Society of Charlotte, Davidson County Animal Shelter and Randolph County Animal Shelter received awards.
