Efforts by the British government to push the European Union toward compliance with a ban on sow crates by Jan. 1, 2013 appear to be on track.

Nine of the European nations affected by the plan say they will have at least 93 percent compliance by the end of the year, including Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Finland, Greece, Poland and Slovenia. Other nations expected to be compliant by the deadline include Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania, Spain and Sweden.

Just two months ago, just three of member states were in compliance while 12 others were unable to confirm that they would be able to comply by Jan. 1.

The stalls have been outlawed in United Kingdom since 1999 and UK officials are pushing for compliance in order to level the playing field for British pork farmers across the European markets where they compete. Britain’s Food and Farming Minister Jim Paice this week noted that all of his nation’s main competitors will be compliant by the deadline while speaking before a meeting of EU agriculture managers in Luxembourg.
