The Senate will take up the farm bill at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday and begin debating and voting on more than 70 amendments in what is known as a “voterama.”
The Senate agreed Monday evening to a unanimous consent agreement on amendments to be debated in the farm bill. There had been speculation that there would be objection to the unanimous consent agreement that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., proposed, but in the end there was not a single objection to the amendment list that had been developed by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich, and ranking member Pat Roberts, R-Kan.
“Due to the strong leadership of senators Stabenow and Roberts, we have locked in an agreement to vote on 73 amendments and proceed to final passage of the farm bill,” a Senate Democratic aide said.
“Under the agreement, we will begin voting on amendments at 2:15 p.m. Amendments will be considered in an alternating fashion between Democrats and Republicans,” the aide said. “We’ll obviously be voting through Wednesday. Whether we go longer than that depends on how many of the amendments below become voice votes.”
The aide also noted that there would be a break to vote on a resolution proposed by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla.
“This bill was developed through bipartisan collaboration, passed committee with broad bipartisan support, and we now have a bipartisan agreement to move forward with a bill that affects 16 million American jobs,” Stabenow said.
“My colleagues on both sides of the aisle understand we must act as soon as possible to give farmers the certainty they need to keep growing the economy,” she said. “This farm bill is unlike any other before it — it cuts spending, ends subsidies, improves accountability and strengthens healthy food systems. We are now closer than ever to achieving real reform in America’s agriculture policy.”
