Egg sets, chicks placed reductions down to a crawl

Poultry producers reduced egg sets by 2 percent and reduced chicks placed by 1 percent in the week ended June 16, compared to a year ago, USDA reported.

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 197 million eggs in incubators during the week ending June 16, down 2 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler growers in the program placed 167 million chicks for meat production during the week ending June 16, down 1 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1 through June 16 were 3.94 billion, down 4 percent from the same period a year earlier.
