Pork, beef supplies in cold storage rise from a year ago, chicken declines

U.S. frozen pork supplies on May 31 were down 4 percent from the previous month but up 16 percent from last year, USDA reported in its monthly Cold Storage report.

Market analysts were expecting frozen pork supplies to be even higher than USDA reported, according to the CME Group’s Daily Livestock Report. USDA reported total pork in cold storage at 636.1 million pounds. Pre-report estimates were looking for 643.3 million pounds.

Stocks of pork bellies were down 13 percent from last month but up 14 percent from last year. USDA reported belly stocks at 65.3 million pounds. Pre-report estimates were looking for around 70 million pounds.

The DLR analysts called the pork belly stocks “far from burdensome.”

Total pounds of beef in freezers were down 4 percent from the previous month but up 11 percent from last year.

Total frozen poultry supplies on May 31 were up 10 percent from the previous month but down 5 percent from a year ago. Total stocks of chicken were up 8 percent from the previous month but down 15 percent from last year.

Total pounds of turkey in freezers were up 14 percent from last month and up 12 percent from May 31, 2011.
