Russia has announced it will ban pork imports from Smithfield Packing Inc.’s facility in Tar Heel, N.C., according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

A government source told Meatingplace the ban resulted from “some sort of residue issue.” He declined to elaborate.

The ban will take effect July 17. Certificates can be signed for pork originating from this establishment through July 16. Shipments of products from this establishment that have started loading prior to July 17 will be allowed entry.

Smithfield officials could not be reached for comment before deadline.
