Broiler egg sets rival year ago again

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 194.1 million eggs in incubators during the week ended July 7, 2012, down just 0.5 percent from the 194.9 set the corresponding week a year earlier, USDA reported.

Egg sets the week ended June 30, egg sets were also down about 0.5 percent from a year ago.
Broiler growers in the program placed 163 million chicks for meat production during the week ended July 7, down 2 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1 through July 7 were 4.44 billion, down 3 percent from the same period a year earlier.
