Mexico slays 2.5 million poultry, quarantines 31 farms in bird flu outbreak

Mexican officials have killed about 2.5 million birds at poultry farms in the state of Jalisco to contain a recent bird flu outbreak, the Ministry of Agriculture reports.
The H7N3 virus does not pose a health risk for human consumption; the measures are intended to protect poultry production, the Ministry added.
Out of the 148 poultry farms in Jalisco visited by Mexican officials, about 31 had traces of bird flu and 34 were negative. The results for the remaining 83 farms were pending.
The affected farms, according to the Ministry, are in quarantine “in hopes that no contaminated poultry meat are transmitted to other states.” The 34 safe poultry farms are being heavily monitored by the Ministry to assure that they are not exposed to the bird flu.
Mexico has imported about 1 million vaccines from Pakistan, through which it has developed a seed-based vaccine. This will be delivered in late July to four national laboratories that will initially produce 80 milion doses.
