U.S. pork exports in May were at 150,235 metric tons, 8.2 percent larger than a year ago, according to the CME Group's Daily Livestock Report.

Japan and Mexico remain the top two markets for U.S. pork, accounting for nearly half of all U.S. pork shipments.

Still, exports to Japan slowed in May, declining 22.5 percent compared to a year ago. "At 34,114 metric tons, pork exports to Japan were the lowest monthly export volume since October 2010. Exports to Mexico have been robust so far this year, averaging about 20 percent above year-ago levels," according to the report. "Shipments to China/Hong Kong were critical for exports last year, especially for Q4. While exports to the Chinese market have slowed down compared to last year’s peak, they still are well above May 2011 levels."

In May, the total pork exports to China and Hong Kong were 22,032 metric tons -- 102 percent higher than a year ago.
