Rep. Kissell discusses Farm Bill in Laurinburg

Last week, Southern Cotton Growers President Allen McLaurin hosted Rep. Larry Kissell (NC-08) for a discussion at General McArthur’s restaurant in Laurinburg with local farmers about the 2012 Farm Bill and other issues facing North Carolina agriculture.
Most of the discussion centered on the Agriculture Committee’s markup of the 2012 Farm Bill, with the farmers conveying the importance of addressing southern agricultural concerns in the House version of the bill. Attendees expressed their concerns with the Senate version of bill. Among their concerns are the Stacked Income Protection Plan for cotton growers, trade concerns with Brazil, maintaining crop insurance, and how cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and other programs will affect regional agriculture producers.
“Agriculture is a fundamental aspect of the North Carolina economy and our way of life,” said Kissell. “The outcome of the upcoming Farm Bill will have an impact on our farmers and our rural communities for years to come. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, I am committed to creating a Farm Bill that best represents the interest of our farming communities and respects the importance role agriculture plays in our nation and in our district.”
McLaurin thanked Kissell and expressed his appreciation for his continued support of the agricultural community.
“We had a good visit with the Congressman,” said McLaurin. “We certainly appreciate all he’s doing for us. He has always been supportive of the agricultural community and the issues we face in the area and we look forward to meeting with him again in August.”
