Broiler-type egg sets holding nearly steady from year ago

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 196 million eggs in incubators during the week ending July 14, 2012, down about 0.5 percent from the corresponding week a year earlier, USDA reported.

Broiler growers in the program placed 163 million chicks for meat production during the week ending July 14, down 1 percent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1 through July 14 were 4.60 billion, down 3 percent from the same period a year earlier.
