June egg production down slightly

United States egg production totaled 7.50 billion during June 2012, down slightly from last year, the USDA has reported. Production included 1.03 billion hatching eggs, of which 965 million were broiler-type.

All layers in the United States on July 1, 2012 totaled 335 million, down slightly from last year. The 335 million layers included 51.6 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs.

Broiler-type chicks hatched during June 2012 totaled 756 million, down 1 percent from June 2011. Eggs in incubators totaled 612 million July 1, 2012, down 1 percent from a year earlier.

Leading breeders placed 6.80 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during June 2012, down 6 percent from June 2011.
