Stephen Benjamin, a Clayton resident and director of the Standards Division at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, was elected chairman of the National Conference on Weights and Measures. He was elected at the organization’s annual meeting July 15-19 in Portland, Maine.
The NCWM consists of about 2,100 state regulators and industry leaders, representing four regional associations. As chairman, Benjamin will oversee the association’s development and implementation of uniform weights-and-measures standards. He also will preside over the group’s interim meeting in Charleston, S.C., next January, and annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., next July.
The NCDA&CS Standards Division is responsible for calibrating and inspecting commercial weights and measures, motor fuels and LP-Gas installations in the state. Benjamin began working for the department as a fuel quality chemist in 1992.
“I think all of us at the department are very proud of Steve’s accomplishment,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “I know he’ll do a great job because of his outstanding service and dedication to the people of North Carolina over the past 20 years.”
Benjamin holds degrees in chemistry and biochemistry from N.C. State University. He lives in Clayton with his wife, Teresa, and their young children.
