Commercial hatcheries set more eggs and placed more broiler-type chicks than a year ago last week, the first year-over-year increases since April and May 2011, respectively.

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 195 million eggs in incubators during the week ending July 21, 2012. This was up slightly from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

The last time egg sets were above a year ago was the week ending April 23, 2011 when egg sets totaled 209.1 million, compared to 207.4 million the previous year, a USDA analyst told Meatingplace.

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 163 million chicks for meat production during the week ending July 21, up slightly from the comparable week a year earlier.

The last time chicks placed were above the previous year was for the week ending May 28, 2011 where chicks placed for that week were 172.8 million, up from 172.6 million the previous year.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1, 2012 through July 21, 2012 were 4.76 billion, down 3 percent from the same period a year earlier.
