State Farmers Market offers $1,000 for largest watermelon at Watermelon Day Thursday, Aug. 2

Growers will bring their biggest melon to vie for cash prizes, bragging rights and the title of largest-watermelon during Watermelon Day at the State Farmers Market. Attendees can watch the weigh-in, sample free watermelon slices, pick up free watermelon recipes and visit with N.C. Watermelon Queen Rachel J. Chavez.

Weigh-in begins at noon in the Farmers Building. No entries will be accepted after 11:30 a.m. Each grower may submit one entry, and all entries must be grown in North Carolina. Growers must be able to identify where the watermelon was grown.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four melons: $1,000 for first, $500 for second, $300 for third and $200 for fourth place. All entries become property of the State Farmers Market following the contest.
