Mexico will not impose tariffs on U.S. imports of chicken leg quarters, the Foreign Trade Commission (COCEX) said today.

The recent avian influenza outbreak in Jalisco state has led to a rising price of both corn and Mexican staple foods, said the Mexican Ministry of Economy in a press release. The International Trade Practices Unit (ITPU) shall not apply countervailing duties set out in resolution.

Up to 6 million poultry have been slaughtered to-date, according to ElEconomista.com.mx, but this number could increase to further control the avian flu outbreak.

The Ministry of Economy will continue to support domestic poultry producers and promote commercial market integration between Mexico and the U.S., according to the Mexican news site.

The COCEX, composed of several Mexican government representatives, noted that it would monitor market conditions and would re-evaluate the anti-dumping duties at a later date.

This week, UTPI announced its final determination in the anti-dumping investigation of U.S. leg quarters, and is expected to publish it next week.
