Egg sets edge down, placements edge up

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 193 million eggs in incubators during the week ending Aug. 11, USDA reported.

That marks a 1-percent decrease over the same week last year. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 85 percent.

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 163 million chicks for meat production during the week ending Aug. 11, up slightly from the comparable period last year.

Cumulative placements from Jan. 1, 2012, through Aug. 11, 2012, were 5.25 billion, down 3 percent from a year ago.
