Philadelphia-based foodservice supplier Aramark announced today with the Humane Society of the United States its plans to eliminate all pork from animals bred using gestation stalls in the company’s U.S. supply chain by 2017.

Aramark and HSUS are leaning on the company’s suppliers to eliminate the use of gestation stalls within their supply chains. Aramark joins an increasing number of corporations in the effort, as well as nine states that have passed laws banning stalls over time.

Aramark “is proud to stand in partnership with other industry leaders and supply chain partners to transition away from gestation crates in a timely fashion,” Kathy Cacciola, the company’s senior director of environmental sustainability, said in a news release. “We’re committed to operating responsibly and addressing key issues, including animal welfare, throughout our supply chain and business, and this commitment helps move the entire industry toward the elimination of gestation crates.”

Aramark has asked its primary pork suppliers to develop plans for reducing and eliminating the use of gestation stalls. New supplier contracts for pork must outline how they will phase out gestation stalls.
Aramark serves clients in 22 countries.
