Two-thirds of EU member states in compliance with upcoming sow stall ban

Eighteen countries are now expected to be compliant with a ban on sow stalls by Jan. 1, 2013, according to U.K.-based Compassion in World Farming.
Figures obtained by the group show that Austria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia have yet to prove compliance.
“Farmers across Europe have had since 2001 to prepare for the new rules, and the fact that there are still a significant number of farms in some countries that are not yet compliant is concerning,” Dil Peeling, the group’s director of public affairs said in a news release. “The new law will go some way to leveling the playing field across the EU but will only help if it is fully enforced.”
In June, nine of the 27 member states affected by the plan said they would have at least 93 percent compliance by the end of the year. In April, just three of the member states were in compliance, while others were unable to confirm that they would be able to comply by Jan. 1.
That number has jumped in recent months as officials in the U.K. – where stalls have been outlawed since 1999 – have pressured the rest of the EU to level the playing field for British pork farmers across the European markets where they compete.
