TAMPA, Fla. — Republicans gathered here in Tampa for the Republican National Convention recognize that Mitt Romney is in trouble with Hispanics.

But when it comes to one of the top issues for this critical voting bloc — immigration — they’d prefer that the GOP candidate not discuss it in his prime-time speech on Thursday.
