Dr. Charles Stuber, professor emeritus of genetics and director of the North Carolina State University Center for Plant Breeding and Applied Plant Genomics, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Plant Breeders.
Stuber received the award during the association’s annual meeting in early August in Indianapolis.
Stuber joined the N.C. State faculty in 1962, holding a joint appointment as a faculty member in the Department of Genetics and as a research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service. He retired in 1998 but then returned to the faculty on a part-time basis in 2006 to develop the Center for Plant Breeding and Applied Plant Genomics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
He continues to serve as center director and is actively involved in raising funds for graduate student fellowships and in recruiting and advising graduate students.
As a full-time faculty member, Stuber was active in several professional societies and received a number of awards for pioneering research in the development of DNA marker-based selection technology that is now used in major plant breeding programs worldwide. He was named USDA-Agricultural Research Service Outstanding Scientist of the Year in 1989 and was inducted into the USDA-ARS Science Hall of Fame in 1999.
Stuber is a fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and Crop Science Society of America and served as president of both organizations. He received the Crop Science Research Award and the Dekalb Genetics Crop Science Distinguished Career Award from the Crop Science Society.
He was also honored with the Genetics and Plant Breeding Award from the National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders and the Award of Merit from the University of Nebraska College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Alumni Association. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska, while his doctorate in genetics and experimental statistics is from N.C. State.
In 2010, Stuber received the N.C. State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Alumnus Award. He is also a member of several honorary societies.
