Commissioners in Nash County, N.C., voted 5-2 Monday night to approve plans for a long-proposed Sanderson Farms plant, according to a report by WITN-TV.

Officials said Sanderson’s plant would bring an estimated 1,100 jobs to the area, but some residents expressed concerns about the potential environmental impact, the station reported.

Steve Wing, an associate professor of epidemiology with the University of North Carolina, said a large-scale poultry operation could potentially pollute the area due to the use of arsenic and antibiotics in the production process, according to the Wilson Daily Times.

The vote came a week after details of an incentives package were announced.

Sanderson Farms said it is still holding off on plans to build the plant under current conditions in the market. The company has been eyeing a plant in the region for two years.
