The N.C. Mining and Energy Commission will hold its second meeting on Friday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building, located at 300 N. Salisbury St. in Raleigh.

At this meeting, the commission will elect a chairman and vice chairman for the full commission; the newly elected chairman will then appoint a chairman and vice chairman for the commission’s Mining Committee. Additionally, staff with the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources will present a proposed work plan, committee structure and a future meeting schedule for the commission’s consideration. Audio of the meeting will be streamed live and can be accessed online at http://www.ncleg.net/Audio/Audio.html by clicking on the link for Room 643.

The General Assembly ratified the “Clean Energy and Economic Security Act,” or Session Law 2012-143, in July. This law reconstitutes the state’s Mining Commission as the North Carolina Mining and Energy Commission and charges the commission with developing a modern regulatory program for the management of oil and gas exploration and development activities in North Carolina, including the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
