Two private citizens have filed a lawsuit accusing Sanderson Farms Inc. and Nash County, North Carolina, of secretly arranging the sale of land for a planned chicken plant.

Nash County residents Carson Barnes and Clay Strickland accuse Sanderson, the county and property owners Cecil and Bertine Williams of arranging the real estate deal without providing public notice or conducting a public hearing as required by law.

Nash County commissioners last week approved plans for the Sanderson plant over the objections of a vocal contingent of local residents concerned about the potential environmental impact. The company has put construction plans on hold until market conditions improve.
