Brinker International, owner of the Chili’s and Maggiano’s restaurant chains, has announced that it will work toward eliminating gestation stalls from its pork supply chain.

"Recognizing that systems aren’t currently in place to guarantee verification of all farming conditions, over the next [five to seven] years Brinker’s goal is to ensure a substantial majority of our pork products are sourced from vendors who have committed to eliminating gestation stalls from farms they operate.,” the company said in a statement posted on its webiste.

Brinker owns more than 1,500 Chili’s Grill & Bar locations, known for their baby-back ribs, as well as Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurants. Brinker also has a stake in Romano’s Macaroni Grill.

Noting that its policy aligns with the position outlined by the American Veterinary Medical Association, Brinker's statement goes on, “Brinker acknowledges there are various ways to achieve our animal welfare beliefs … including phasing out gestation stalls. We are working with our pork suppliers to do this, which will take time to implement.”
