The leaves are changing, the N.C. State Fair is just around the corner and the pumpkins are ready for the 27th annual Decorated Pumpkin Contest at the State Farmers Market, Oct. 4.

“Visitors to farmers markets, roadside stands and local farms should have plenty of pumpkins to choose from this year,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “There’s been ample rainfall through the pumpkin growing season, and we haven’t experienced the heavy rains late in the season that hurt the crop last year.”

The contest is open to all ages, and is divided into three divisions: 8 years and under, 9 to 15, and 16 and older. Entries will be accepted in the Farmers Building Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m., or Thursday, Oct. 4, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Decorated pumpkins will be judged on use of color and shape, the quality of the pumpkin and creativity. Entries can be carved or painted, and can use other forms of art media. No artificial pumpkins will be accepted.

Winners in each division will receive a top prize of $40. Second-, third- and fourth-place finishers will earn $25, $10 and $5, respectively. In addition, everyone who enters will receive a free State Farmers Market T-shirt. The event is sponsored by the State Farmers Market Restaurant, the State Farmers Market and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
