The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a directive to its employees that explains the processes they are to use in implementing, overseeing and enforcing the new Cooperative Interstate Shipment (CIS) program.

The CIS program enables cross-border transportation of beef, pork and poultry products from state-inspected facilities. The program was created as part of the 2008 farm bill, but is just now becoming a reality, with Ohio as the first state enrolled in the program.
