The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Food and Drug Protection Division is hosting two seminars in November to help food processors develop strategies to reduce the risk of food contamination incidents and to help them handle such situations if they should occur.
The seminars, which run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be held Nov. 7 at the Foothills Higher Education Center, 2128 S. Sterling St., Morganton, and Nov. 28 at Wayne County Cooperative Extension Office, 208 W. Chestnut St., Goldsboro. They are free, but registration is required. Registration deadlines are Nov. 5 for the Morganton event and Nov. 26 for the Goldsboro event.
“Anyone in the food processing business should plan to attend one of these important seminars,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Not only are food businesses required under the Food Safety Modernization Act to have remediation strategies in place in the event of a situation involving food contamination, but having a plan can help reduce the impact of such an incident on consumers and on the business.”
Topics to be covered include current good manufacturing practices, the use of personal protective equipment and sanitary practices for employees and contractors, cleaning processes, the review and implementation of appropriate sanitary measures, remediation strategies, risk factors and risk communication, confining a contaminate and implementing response, proper disposal of contaminated waste and confirming a facility is decontaminated.
The seminars are provided through a Food and Drug Administration Innovative Food Defense Program grant.
