The United States and Europe Union plan to begin trade talks early next year to enhance transatlantic business, according to a report by Reuters.

The bloc and the United States collectively make up about half of the world's economic output and nearly a third of world trade. But the European debt crisis and sluggish American economy are prompting both to consider eliminating final trade barriers.

A group co-chaired by EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk are expected in December to issue a report recommending talks, EU and U.S. officials say, according to Reuters.

Trade officials don’t expect the outcome of the U.S. presidential election to influence discussions.
