As the high-profile, often acrimonious case between Waterkeeper Alliance and Hudson Farm, one of Perdue Farms’ contract growers, came to a close, Perdue Farms issued a statement about the issues.

It said, in part, that “ this case came down to the proposition that any chicken house with a door or a fan is a source of pollution and therefore likely in violation of the Clean Water Act.”

“We remain committed to responsible environmental stewardship and share that commitment with the farm families who raise our chickens. Perdue is an environmental leader and has a long history of investing millions of dollars in research, technologies, equipment upgrades, awareness and training to address environmental issues.”

Meanwhile, SaveFarmFamilies.org, an organization created in part to help fund the contract grower’s legal bills, issued a statement that said, “All along we‘ve said that this lawsuit threatens family farms across the country…. The best [the plaintiffs] could come up with is that dust from the poultry house fans and the small amount of litter from foot traffic in and out of the poultry house constitute a violation of the Clean Water Act. … The farming community looks forward to a favorable ruling.”

Waterkeepers Alliance had not issued a statement at deadline.
