Gov. Bev Perdue is requesting assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration for Dare County to help residents recover from damage caused by Hurricane Sandy last week.

"This was a huge storm that caused massive amounts of destruction from North Carolina to Maine,” Gov.. Perdue said. “Overall, our state was very fortunate. But for some residents along the Outer Banks, Hurricane Sandy was devastating and they need our help. We will do everything possible to ensure that those who suffered damages from Sandy will get any possible aid so they can repair their homes and resume their lives."

Local and state emergency management teams went out with SBA staff last week surveying damage in the hardest hit areas. Teams looked at more than 80 homes and businesses in Dare County. The formal survey is the first step in determining what areas may qualify for state and/or federal funding assistance.

If the federal government grants the governor’s request for assistance, it clears the way for SBA to provide low-interest loans to storm victims. The SBA is the agency that can provide low interest loans for homeowners, renters and businesses that suffered damage from the storms.

In addition, the governor is expected to make a state disaster declaration for Individual Assistance in accordance with guidelines set forth in N.C. General Statute 166A. The state declaration paves the way for storm survivors to seek state funds to help them recover.

Hurricane Sandy moved through the state October 27 through 30, bringing heavy rains, strong winds and causing severe coastal flooding. Two deaths in North Carolina were attributed to the storm.
