The value of U.S. poultry exports through the third quarter of 2012 set a new year-over-year record of more than $4 billion, the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) reported.

The quantity of poultry exported was just below the all-time record set in 2008, USAPEEC said, citing data from USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service.

U.S. poultry meat exports for January through September reached 3.04 million metric tons, up 6 percent from the same period a year ago. The value of the exports climbed 14 percent to $4.032 billion.

September softness
Broiler meat exports excluding chicken paws set new records in the nine-month period, hitting 2.4 million tons, up 6 percent, at a value of $3.1 billion, up 18 percent.

In the month of September, however, exports of broiler meat excluding paws fell 3 percent to 279,279 tons, compared with the same period a year ago. The value of those exports rose 4 percent to $355.1 million. The decline in tonnage was attributed to decreased shipments in the month to Hong Kong, Russia and Angola.
