Forecasts earlier this year that hog producers would liquidate a lot of sows in response to expensive feed grains has not occurred so far, according to analysis of recent USDA data.

“We doubt that the possibility of a large reduction in the breeding herd and lower hog supplies in late 2013 is zero yet but the probabilities are, in our opinion, getting lower with each passing week,” livestock analysts wrote in the CME Group’s Daily Livestock Report, published by Paragon Economics founder Steve Meyer and Steiner Consulting Group principal Len Steiner.

Sow slaughter has slowed since early October, falling far short of year-ago levels in 3 of the past 4 weeks, the analysts wrote, noting the U.S. sow herd has become more stable over time with both expansions and contractions being smaller in percentage magnitude.
