Congresswoman Renee Ellmers released the following statement from her office in Washington this morning after being named to sit on the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the 113th Congress:

"I am truly honored by this appointment to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Chairman Upton has led this committee with honor and distinction over the past two years and I am humbled by the privilege to serve with him as we work to grow our economy and address the important issues facing our country. By serving on this committee, I am determined to represent the various interests throughout the state of North Carolina and be an influential voice on behalf of my constituents. The North Carolina Republican delegation has a proud history of consecutive representation on this committee in recent years from Richard Burr to Sue Myrick and I am proud to continue this legacy. I would like to thank Chairman Upton for his confidence in me and I look forward to working with all my fellow committee members during the 113th Congress."

Last night, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton announced that Congresswoman Renee Ellmers will be named as a new member on the committee. The House Energy and Commerce Committee is considered one of the most powerful committees in Congress and is the oldest standing legislative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. The committee is vested with the broadest jurisdiction of any congressional authorizing committee.

Today it has responsibility for the nation's telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health research, environmental quality, energy policy, and interstate and foreign commerce. It oversees multiple cabinet-level Departments and independent agencies, including the Departments of Energy, Health and Human Services, Commerce, and Transportation, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Federal Communications Commission.
