U.S. must fix COOL by May: WTO

Washington must align its mandatory country-of-origin labeling law with international trade rules by May 23, an arbitrator for the World Trade Organization decided Tuesday.

Giorgio Sacerdoti’s determination of a “reasonable period of time” gives the United states some six months to comply with the recommendations of a June 29 ruling by a WTO dispute settlement panel siding with Canadian and Mexican complaints against U.S. COOL.

Among its findings, the panel found that COOL accorded less favorable treatment to imported cattle and hogs, and that it does not fulfill its objective of providing consumers with information on origin.
