Researchers at Iowa State University are working on a way to limit ammonia accumulation in the air around poultry houses while converting it into a sustainable product.
Ammonia released from poultry manure may accumulate in the atmosphere in the form of acid rain – causing algae outgrowth in ponds and lakes.
The researchers are developing a bioreactor designed to filter ammonia (up to 96 percent) out of the exhaust air in poultry houses while using the gas to grow algae into a useful product in a controlled environment, according to a report in the Iowa State Daily.
The cultivated algae could provide a source of biomass for biofuel production, as well as an additive for animal feed.
The researchers are working to scale the bioreactor up to commercial standards, according to the report.
