The Brazilian state of Santa Catarina will export pork meat to the U.S. starting in March 2013, announced Thomas Shannon Jr., the U.S. ambassador to Brazil.

Shannon was in the Brazilian city of Florianopolis last Wednesday to strengthen trade relations between both countries and, per Brazilian news site G1 Globo, said that “all formalities have been completed.”

With this agreement, Santa Catarina, as an FMD-free state in the country, becomes the only Brazilian state authorized to export this product to the U.S.

One major benefit for the Brazilian state is the product quality guarantee set forth by the agreement. "The pork products certified to enter the U.S. can get in almost any market," said Shannon.

In January, six processing plants in Santa Catarina were initially authorized by the USDA to be pork exporters to the U.S.
