Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that Willow Tex LLC, a textile manufacturer and distributor, will locate a new facility in Surry County. The company plans to create 37 jobs and invest $6.1 million during the next three years in Mount Airy. The project was made possible in part by a $130,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

“North Carolina has a long and celebrated history in the textile industry,” said Gov. Perdue. “Manufacturers are locating here because our state’s investments in education and workforce development programs have created a top-notch business climate.”

Willow Tex manufactures and distributes high-quality, synthetic leather that is sold to the contract design, marine and aviation markets. The company owns the trademark rights to IZIT Leather and the multiple product lines branded IZIT. These leather products are known for their durability, flammability performance, leather-like appearance and suppleness.

Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual wage for the new jobs will be $56,041 plus benefits. The Surry County average annual wage is $29,484.

"Willow Tex is pleased to join the Mount Airy, Surry County community,” said Drew Clabough, General Manager for Willow Tex. “We look forward to a long, mutually beneficial relationship with our employees and neighbors.”

The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.

“This is an excellent project for Surry County,” said Rep. Sarah Stevens of Mt. Airy. “Willow Tex could have located this facility anywhere, but clearly our business climate and skilled workforce makes North Carolina the best choice.”

North Carolina continues to have a top-ranked business climate. Through Gov. Perdue’s JobsNOW initiative, the state works aggressively to create jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.

Through use of the One NC Fund, more than 65,000 jobs and $12 billion in investment have been created since 2001. Other partners that helped with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Ports, Surry County, Town of Mount Airy, Surry Community College and the Surry County Economic Development Partnership.
