NCDA&CS to host small-business workshop on preventing food recalls Jan. 16 in Triad

A workshop aimed at helping small food businesses prevent and respond to recalls will take place Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the Triad.
The workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Moose Café meeting room at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market in Colfax. It is sponsored by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the N.C. Food Safety and Defense Task Force.
“This workshop is the latest in a series of educational programs we’ve held around the state for small food businesses,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “It is designed specifically for certified home kitchen food entrepreneurs, shared-use kitchen food businesses, food processing and packaging businesses, and meat processing facilities.”
Topics to be covered include the economics of food recalls, a retail company’s perspective on recalls, communicating with the public and your customers during a recall, common and avoidable mistakes in the food chain and a risk-based approach to preventing foodborne disease outbreaks. Speakers include officials from Food Lion, NCDA&CS, N.C. Sea Grant and the N.C. Division of Public Health.
The cost is $30 and includes lunch and materials. The registration deadline is Jan. 9. A registration form can be downloaded from www.ncagr.gov/markets/agribiz.
