Arthur Kerner Pitzer    November 1, 1918 - December 29, 2012

Arthur Kerner Pitzer, 94, of Raleigh died Saturday, December 29, 2012. Art was born on Nov. 1, 1918 in Portsmouth, OH to the late Lemuel Kerner Pitzer and Anna Lou Piles. He served during WWII in the US Army, seeing action in both the European and North African campaigns. Art was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars; later in the war he earned an additional Bronze Star for acts of heroism, acts of merit, and meritorious service in a combat zone.

After graduating from North Carolina State University, he began his career with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture in 1957, serving as Manager of the NC State Fair for 17 years. He was elected President of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions in 1972 and President of the NC Association of Agricultural Fairs in 1973. He was inducted into the International Association of Fairs and Expositions Hall of Fame and received an Honorary Life Membership in the NC Association of Agricultural Fairs. He has been an active member of Westover United Methodist Church since 1958.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Merle Sasser Pitzer, and by his three children: son, Eddie Pitzer and wife, Bonnie; daughter, Sue Harrington and husband, Spence; and son, Bill Pitzer; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by a son, Arthur K. Pitzer, Jr. in 1955.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 2nd at 2pm at Westover United Methodist Church, 300 Powell Dr. Raleigh, NC 27606. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall for family and friends. Burial will be held Thursday at in Whiteville, NC at Columbus Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westover United Methodist Church.
