The world’s appetite for U.S. pork in the first 11 months of 2012 continued to outpace records set in 2011, according to the latest figures from USDA analyzed by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

The organization reported that the amount of pork shipped through November 2012 rose 5 percent to nearly 1.7 million metric tons while the value of U.S. pork exports in the period climbed 4 percent to more than $5 billion.

Exports to Colombia (up 63 percent), Chile (61 percent) and New Zealand (47 percent) led the surge in terms of volume, while the same three nations – not surprisingly – also paced the highest sales value at $43 million, $34 million and $22 million, respectively.

The largest jump over the 11 months of 2012 was seen in Eastern Europe, where volume rose 365 percent and sales soared to $8.7 million from $2.4 million in 2011.

The USMEF expects 12-month figures for pork exports to finish 2 percent higher than corresponding 2011 levels in volume and 5 percent in terms of value when those figures become available.
