The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will offer a seminar Tuesday, Feb. 5, to help Charlotte-area food processors develop strategies for reducing the risk of food contamination incidents and for handling them if they do occur.

The department’s Food and Drug Protection Division will conduct the seminar from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Mecklenburg County Cooperative Extension Training Facility, 1418 Armory Drive, Charlotte. The program is free, but registration is required. Register online at http://mecklenburg.ces.ncsu.edu/innovativefooddefense/. The registration deadline is Jan. 29.

“Anyone in the food processing business can benefit from this seminar,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Food businesses are required under the federal Food Safety Modernization Act to have remediation strategies in place in the event of a situation involving food contamination. Having a plan can help reduce the impact of such an incident on consumers and on the business.”

The seminar will cover the following topics: current good manufacturing practices; the use of personal protective equipment and sanitary practices for employees and contractors; cleaning processes; the review and implementation of appropriate sanitary measures; remediation strategies; risk factors and risk communication; confining a contaminate and implementing response; proper disposal of contaminated waste and confirming a facility is decontaminated.

The seminar is provided through a grant from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Innovative Food Defense Program.
